Where is Hvar located and how to get there?
Hvar is situated between the islands of Brač and Korčula, approximately one hour from Split and it is the fourth-largest island in Croatia (72 km). There are multiple ways to reach the island. The island itself has two ferry ports: one in Sućuraj (north part of the island) and Stari Grad (main ferry port). These are the only ways to reach the island by car. Another popular mode of transport to Hvar is by fast catamaran, which takes only an hour from Split or Korčula. You can also arrive by private taxi boat, the fastest travel option, or by private charter, as Hvar town has its own port, including a port in Palmižana (Pakleni Islands). Hvar also has a helipad, allowing you to fly to the island. A useful tip for a less stressful vacation is to purchase tickets for boat taxi in advance (at least a day before) and arrive at the port at least half an hour before the scheduled departure time of ferries and boats. If you are arriving by car, it is best to arrive at the port 30-45 minutes before departure to secure the best seat for yourself.
Quick historical overview of the island
Brief history of Hvar
Hvar town boasts a long and illustrious history, particularly in the 13th century when it served as an important naval base with a fortress above the town and surrounding walls that provided protection. During this period, Hvar flourished under the Venetian rule. The Cathedral of St. Stephen was built, and the first public theater in Europe was opened during this era, a revolutionary development as it allowed people from all social classes to enjoy theatrical performances together. Until the 17th century, Hvar was home to some of the most important figures in Croatian literature, such as Hanibal Lucić, who wrote the first profane drama, “The Slave Girl.” His summer house is located in the town of Hvar and is a must-see attraction. In the 17th century, a group of locals founded the “Hygienic Society of Hvar,” with the aim of promoting Hvar’s tourism offerings and development. This initiative was further aided by Hvar’s subsequent rule by the Austrians and Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Sissi), who sponsored the construction of a therapeutic hotel, now known as the Palace Elisabeth Hotel. Besides tourism, the locals historically relied on “purple gold,” better known as lavender. In the 20th century, lavender fields covered one-fifth of the entire island, constituting a lucrative business.
